The Church and a Bit of Love and Story

November 2012

Lettuce Says,

It's time to feature my dear hometown, Malolos City! Malolos is the city capital of Bulacan.  Some of you may think Bulacan is not worth visiting since it's just a UV Express away from Metro Manila. But if you want to unwind over the weekend, one of your cheapest options are in Malolos City!

Initially, this post is for our closest family and friends who need map directions and hotels to stay in to witness our matrimony this December. But Sunrise and I have thought to open a travel inserts here in My Empty Plates. (Yey!) And a great way to launch this is to start with my hometown.

I grew up here in Malolos in a conservative and simple home. All I know then is study and read novels. I went to Marcelo H. del Pilar High School which is now a National High School, what a feat! I belonged to a special science section back then which somehow equipped me well for college. Good job for all the national high schools out there!

I'd like to share some of our wedding preps and the culture differences we found out along the way.

We got our marriage license in Binan, Laguna. We attended the pre-marriage seminar arranged by the city hall. There were approx. 35 couples who attended wherein we were one of the oldest in age. Hehe sorry career woman tyo eh! Most of them were in their teens and some were already pregnant. We paid PhP200 when we filled out and file forms. After a week, we attended the seminar for free. The week after, we  paid PhP10 and got our marriage license. Pretty fast! Take note that the license is only valid for 120 days.

Let's go to the church requirements. We wish to be wed in Basilica Minore Immaculada Concepcion, popularly known as, Malolos Cathedral. We chose this church over the more popular Barasoain Church because of its significance in our lives. We both love Mama Mary. I was a choir member of the 7am mass back in my high school years. This was where I received the Sacrament of Confirmation.

December 8, 2006, which was also the Feast of Immaculate Concepcion, while we were hearing mass, two months after I finally ended my past relationship, I asked Mama Mary for a sign that if this guy is still here with me on this church attending mass on Mama Mary's birthday, September 8, 2007, it means that maybe He's iz it. Guess when is our anniversary?

Regarding the wedding date of course we prefer Dec 8 but by January of this year, almost all weekend afternoon slots were filled up already except Dec 29. Later we found out the significance, guess when was my confirmation date? :)

Then we had our interview with the parish priest, Fr. RJ. I was really nervous when we had the interview that I told him almost everything, he didn't have any questions left for John. Hehehe

When we attended the pre-cana seminar, Fr. RJ and the speakers were very glad because all the couples who attended were as he said, in the ripest age for marriage. All were in the 24-36 age range. As a girl who grew up in Malolos, I can say that most people here were those who study, then work and give back to their parents, assist in their younger siblings' education expenses before finally settling down and build their own family.

The priest that will officiate in our wedding is Fr. Rany of (guest where? Mama Mary never failed to give us the signs) the Immaculate Concepcion Parish-Tayuman, was a highschool batchmate of Sunrise in OLGMS. Yes, once upon a time, Sunrise entered the seminary.

Without further ado, here are the google maps and directions going to the Malolos Cathedral.

Solace in Mary Grace

April 2012

Lettuce Says,

Work and wedding preps made us excited and stressed at the same time. Good thing, Sunrise and I, found some solace fix in Greenbelt 2.

Meet my lovingly kaagaw sa iced tea, este, my fiance, Sunrise :)
Iced tea pa lang solved na lolo nyo.

Peach Ice Tea, Pitcher (PhP224)
We really love the iced tea no matter that a pitcher cost us an entree.

Grilled Ensaymada (PhP 73)
Expensive, yes, but amazingly good! Bread is super soft and  you can taste the high quality of ingredients used.

Sunrise and Squash

Summer Squash Soup (PhP124)
If I'm sick, I'll get better by just looking and smelling this soup.

Pasta Americana with Italian Meatballs (PhP210)

Serving is really good for one with a small appetite. But Sunrise felt full because of the relaxing atmosphere and the good quality of the food served. I love its garlic bread with real garlic bits. The meatball is really meaty but could use some salt. Sunrise asked for extra parmeasan cheese to make it more salty.

Table Trinkets

This restaurant will remind you of your grannies' house. I can relate to this but a more sosyal version of my lolo and lola's former wooden house in Pinagbakahan, which is sadly, now physically demolished, but will forever stay in my memory. And instead of spaghetti and iced tea, arrozcaldo and Sarsi will greet you then. Once you enter, no matter how adult you are already, all your pain and troubles simply melt away, and you're instantly enveloped with the comforter-like love of your lola. Aww, I'm sure a lot of you can remember your grannies crib that evoke the same melancholic feeling.

Their servings are small and good for only one person. As always, Sunrise and I shared everything. Food prices are quite expensive here. A light meal can cost you around PhP500 per person. We normally don't order drinks since they are always the overpriced items on the menu. Unless, well, because I just can't resist the iced tea! Their drinking water tastes good too with all that lemon and orange slices.

Taking in the homey ambiance, good service, and quality food, it's definitely worth it, not everyday but at least once in a while. As often as you visit your grannies' farm.

Sunrise Says,

If you haven't tried Mary Grace yet, you are missing a lot. A homey experience because of the food they serve plus excellent service. And if you are budding entrepreneur like me, you should know how Mary Grace became to be. Their story is one exceptional entrepreneurial journey that can inspire many.
