Sewing Machines and Barako Coffee at Cafeño

Lettuce Says,

While I was searching for some resort reviews for our Laiya beach getaway, I found Cafeño. I immediately noted it down on my mind as one of our pit stops.

When we arrived at San Juan town proper, Cafeño greeted us. You can't simply miss it when you are going to Laiya. Just look for Petron and Puregold who shared the same intersection.

After a long jeepney and bus rides, a quick break was demanded by our bodies and bladders. Hence, the immediate discovery of this quaint coffee shop, Cafeño.

Cafeño is a part of an old heritage home which used to be a gas station, owned by former Cong. Marasigan. The gas station was later transferred across the street (now Petron). Cafeno opened in 2006 and has known for their Barako infused menu items like Barako ice cream which was made from scratch. They have a lot of offerings from rice meals to cakes. They use locally grown and organic produce. They also support sustainability by using manila papers as placemats. Cool!

Intrigued by the title?

See for yourselves.

Antique Singers. Old-school sewing machines as tables with a candle holder to boot!

While I'm loving the crochet mats, I hit the desk bell to call the attention of the server to place our orders. But actually we paid as we ordered in the cashier.

We ordered Sweet Tamales with Kapeng Barako (PhP85)

The tamales is made of sticky rice topped with coconut shavings and santan sauce.

Was it, Santan, the flower?! When we were kids, santan was the most popular flower in the whole neigborhood alongside gumamela. Are you an FB follower of Nung Bata Ako Kumain Ako ng Nectar ng Santan sa Garden? LOL

Who can remember how we pull out the thin stalk in the middle of the flower, and taste the sweet dewy nectar of santan?

But, according to Cafeno, santan sauce is not in anyway made up of santan nectar(how wild can my imagination be LOL).

According to one of our readers and confirmed by Cafeno themselves,

Santan Sauce Over Sweet Tamales
The santan sauce has the right sweetness that went great with the tamales which in turns complements the coffee.

Since we ate a hearty breakfast before we left Calamba, so Sunrise and I just shared this snack with a serving of Kapeng Barako Ice Cream. I was expecting a bitter black ice cream, to my amazement, it was a creamy milky version of the coffee. It was like a Kapeng Barako girlified! :) You can taste its unique homey goodness.

Hot N Cold
Cafeño definitely is a must stop before and after you hit those Laiya beaches!

  3. I think that Santan sauce is made of coconut milk & sugar not of Santan nectar.

    1. Lettuce Says,
That is most likely true, but for good measure, we'll ask Cafeño regarding that! :)
When I tasted the santan sauce, there was a slight flowery essence, which made me remember all the dissected santan stalks in our backyard and all the ant bites that I had when I was young. LOL
